Investments

To invest in Countryside Energy Co-operative you first must become a member.

Investments are made by Members applying for Preference Shares, which are internal to the Co-operative. These shares provide the Co-operative with equity (capital) to purchase the equipment and services required to develop renewable energy projects such as PV installations and windfarms and to develop the organization.

Investment money is put into the Co-operative’s projects which develop renewable energy and sell to the grid via the Ontario Power Authority’s “Feed-In Tariff” [Feed-in Tariffs (FIT)] program, providing a 20-year contract with a guaranteed price for that period.

Preference Shares

Preference Shares are internal to the Co-operative and cannot be traded on the stock market. Bought by Members which raises equity for the Co-operative to develop projects and to develop the Co-operative itself. Dividends will be based on the number of Preference Shares held by a Member.

Preference Shares, which can only be bought by the Co-operative’s Members, have a par value of $20.00 with a minimum purchase of 25 ($500.00) Preference Shares, with no dollar or number upper limit.

Irrespective of the number of Preference Shares a Member holds, all Members have equal ownership in the Co-operative’s projects. Co-op membership is built on the principle of one member, one vote. True democracy !

Dividends

In return, the Board of Directors will periodically (usually annually) announce a dividend to Preference Share holders based on the profits made by the Co-operative and after deduction of operating expenses and retained earnings. A shareholder will receive a dividend based on the number of Preference shares they hold.

The timing of this is dependent on meeting all of the regulations to get renewable energy into production.

Selling Preference Shares

In the event that a Member wishes to sell their Preference Shares, they can only be sold back to the Co-operative. A full description on the rules and regulations around selling shares will be outlined in the Share Offering.
